Altar decorations

From AppleBride Community Encyclopedia

While some couples may opt for traditional flowers or awnings for their ceremony venue, others may want to use other items for a number of reasons. When deciding on any decorations, try to think of things that not only fit into the decor of the venue and wedding but which are also meaningful to you and your fiancé(e).

Flowers

Flowers are one of the most traditional altar decorations. Some venues have these set up on either side of the altar while others may want them directly on or in front of the altar. Always be sure to check with your venue about what items they may require for your ceremony.

Generally altar flowers contain 5-20 stems of various flowers and greenery, arranged in a half-circle spray. While many couples prefer fresh flowers, others- especially those with pollen allergies- may prefer artificial flowers. Flowers may also be combined with some of the flower alternatives listed below. When deciding on altar flowers, keep in mind the ambiance of the venue as well as your budget and wedding colors. Some flowers may not be in season and hence more expensive. Some may also be so flashy that they will draw attention away from the couple.

Altar flower arrangements are often relatively easy to do yourself. For more information, please see the Flower arrangements page.

Flower Alternatives

In addition to flowers, there are many other things that can serve as classy and elegant altar decorations. Below are some pictures and ideas. These decorations could also be fun do-it-yourself projects for the couple or someone close to them.

Tip: Be sure to clear any non-traditional alternatives with your venue. Some churches require that flowers be placed on the altar and some will even require certain florists or arrangements, or say only professionals can do it.

Vases or sconces

These items are ideal to be put in vases, sconces, or other item normally used to hold flowers.

  • Decorative ivy
  • Decorative greens or branches (such as magnolia, dogwood, and mistletoe)
  • Beaded sticks or wands
  • Decorative bamboo sticks
  • Decorative lighted rods
  • Sparklers (they can be lit during the ceremony)
  • Decorative flags
  • Doves or other fauna such as butterfies (supported by sticks to be stuck in the sconces or vases)
  • Decorative hearts, plaques, angels, or other objects/ornaments (supported by sticks to be stuck in the sconces or vases)

Pedastals, stands, or altars

These items are ideal for small pedastals or other flat surfaces. Many of these could be easy and inexpensive do-it-yourself projects.

  • Candles & decorative candlesticks
  • Decorative globes (often these are shimmery balls that are flat on the bottom to allow placement)
  • Decorative crosses (these may be able to be blessed by your officiant as part of the ceremony and then displayed in your home later)
  • Picture frames with pictures of yourself and your fiancé
  • Picture frames with pictures of any relatives that may have passed
  • Tasteful scupltures depicting love (cake toppers could even be used here)
  • Decorative wreaths (which can be decorated with real or artificial ivy, mistletoe or other greenery, stones, or other small decorations)
