Groomsmen are the Groom's chief attendants at the wedding, parallel to the bridesmaids. In fact, the number of groomsmen may match the number of bridesmaids for purposes of symmetry. The average wedding would have five groomsmen. Usually, close male friends and brothers of the groom are elected for this position. Sometimes they may assume the role as ushers or their supervisors. The number one groomsman would be the Best Man.
This wedding from 1982 had 7 groomsmen.
Duties
The groomsmen may take up any of the same responsibilities that the ushers have, or even be the ushers or their supervisors. Each one may also be responsible for some of the wedding expenses, particularly those relevant to him; it may cost up to $1500, including the tuxedo, travel, and gift.
Before the Ceremony
The groomsmen help organize the bachelor party with the Best Man and attend the rehearsal and dinner.
Ceremonial Duties
The groomsmen work together to roll down the aisle runner and adjust the pew ribbons.
One groomsmen escorts one bridesmaid down the aisle. In case of inequality between the number of groomsmen and the number of bridesmaids, some groomsmen may walk down the aisle alone or even with two bridesmaids for each among them. The groomsmen could also escort the mothers to their seats.
Reception Duties
The groomsmen may help clean up the chapel beforehand. The groomsmen may also dance with the bridesmaids and help the best man decorate the wedding getaway car.
