Mother of the Groom

The mother of the groom often takes the responsibilities of meeting the bride's family with the intent of bringing both the bride's and the groom's families together. She may also work with the father of the groom in administering and giving out invitations for the rehearsal dinner.

Traditional Duties of the Mother of the Groom


Showers


The mother of the groom attends the bridal shower with a gift for the bride.


Toasts


The mother of the groom may assist the father of the groom's toasts during the rehearsal dinner and the reception.


The groom could escort his mother down the aisle.

Traditional Ceremonial Duties


Before the ceremony, the mother of the groom lights a candle along with the father of the groom and both parents of the bride.


The Mother of the Groom goes down the aisle with a groomsman related to her. Alternately, like in a Jewish wedding, she may even go with groom himself.


Other Culturally-Specific Duties


Afghan (Muslim)


The mother of the groom puts henna dye on the bride's palm and the groom's pinkie and covers them both with a sheer piece of cloth.


Jewish


The mother of the groom and the mother of the bride break a plate during kabbalat panim, a preliminary ceremony. The broken plate is symbolic of a relationship that, once broken, cannot be completely mended.


During the ceremony, the mother of the groom brings the groom down the aisle.


Traditional Wedding Reception Duties


The mother of the groom introduces her friends and family to the bride's friends and family and may assist the father of the groom's toast. She may also dance with the groom to a song of her choice.
