Definition

Silk is a natural fiber harvested from silkworm larvae through a process known as sericulture. The fabric made from silk is one of the most prized luxury fabrics. Silk was originally produced in China and silk production slowly spread throughout Asia. It should be noted that after sericulture, the worm is then prepared for human consumption.

Because of its unsurpassed lustre and elegant softness, silk is an expensive but popular choice for wedding gown fabrics. Many wedding gowns are traditionally made from silk.

Tip: If you're vegan, you may want to read your wedding dress label carefully. Commercial silk is derived directly from the silkworm and hence is an animal product.
