A slip is a type of undergarment generally worn under skirts or robes. Some decorative slips can also be worn as formal wear (such a slip dress or sheath dress) while other may contain shaping material or crinolines. Modern slips are generally worn for shape (to smooth out the look of the dress/robe) or comfort (to protect the skin from fabric and vice versa).

A slip differs from a petticoat in that it covers both the upper and partially the lower halves of the body. Half-slips cover the lower half of the body only and hence are synonymous with petticoats. Slips also differ from traditional petticoats in that they are usually comprised of one or two layers of thin or silky fabric, commonly rayon, nylon, polyester, silk, or satin.
