Ushers, general attendants other than the most important and traditional ones (such as the Bride, the Groom, their parents, the Best Man, and the like), are usually found at a wedding. They take care of many different tasks necessary to make the wedding a seamless one. Even close relatives, such as brothers, could be ushers. This is no demeaning position by any means--ushers play a key role in the wedding as do the other attendants.

There should be 1 usher for every 50 guests. Not every usher does every task--certain tasks can be delegated to each usher.

Ushers may perform any of the following tasks at weddings:

  • Greet the guests as they enter.
  • Have the guests sign the guest book as they enter.
  • Distribute programmes.
  • Guide the guests to their proper seats.
  • Answer guests' questions.
  • Guide the guests to the reception.
  • Have the guests meet the Bride and the Groom.
  • Maintain order during the event.

Seating Guests

Many weddings utilize their Ushers to primarily seat important members of the guest list, like the Mothers of both the Bride and Groom and Grandmothers of the Bride and Groom. If you will have multiple family members being seated by the Usher make sure that the Usher not only understands who he will be seating, but also that those family members or guests understand how they will be escorted to their seats. This is especially important for extended or seperated/divorced families.
